Jeremy Laing

Jeremy Laing makes objects, spaces and situations of embodiment. Utilizing material as a conduit for mimesis, draping fabrics relax like bodies, wrapped yarns enflesh ceramic “bones”, and textures become affective mirrors. These material tendencies, objects of strange pleasure, and vernacular structures establish a visceral thing-to-thing-to-body interaction, and with this, a relation to phenomenalism in the objects’ desire to be sensed; touched, petted, sniffed, polished, or listened to.  With bits of humour folded into the seriousness of articulating the sensations and complexities of being-in-the-world, Jeremy’s work upholds a gentleness that we wish for and from each other, and ourselves. It is within these concepts of care that the felt qualities of their work can be appreciated within the sacred context of the transitional potential of the self; or rather, the acts, gestures, and rituals of simultaneously wrapping and unravelling, becoming and undoing.
